Replace one vague environmental line with wording that the held record actually supports. Evidence is judged against the proposed narrowed sentence, not the discarded headline. If evidence for that proposed wording is missing, leave rewritten text blank. Completing a row is not a lawful claim.

Rewrite against held evidence

One row per product line. The sheet is self-contained: store claim_id or evidence_reference, evidence_status (held, estimate_only or missing), proposed_wording_scope, and evidence_supports_proposed_wording (yes, no or unknown).

A held component fact may support a narrower rewrite while original_claim_supported stays no. rewritten_text is filled only when evidence is held or estimate_only and evidence_supports_proposed_wording is yes. If evidence for the proposed wording is missing or unknown, rewritten_text stays blank.

row_status is waiting, gap_recorded, retained_not_used or ready_for_internal_review. waiting means work is incomplete. gap_recorded is a completed gap record with blank rewritten text. retained_not_used means the original line is kept off the public claim. ready_for_internal_review is a finished rewrite ready for review, not a lawful claim.

Do not invent substantiation. Do not derive post-consumer origin from the word recycled.

Put the limitation next to the claim

Save a copy of the blank file and type into the copy. The files are plain CSV with no formulas.

Columns: rewrite_id, original_text, proposed_wording_scope, claim_id, evidence_reference, evidence_status, evidence_supports_proposed_wording, original_claim_supported, rewritten_text, evidence_note, qualification_needed, no_qualification_reason, limitation_text, limitation_placement, limitation_effect, row_status and note.

qualification_needed is yes or no_qualification_needed. The latter needs no_qualification_reason. Material qualifications must be close and non-contradictory. Additional supporting detail is not always essential qualifying information. limitation_effect is none, essential_qualifier, supporting_detail or contradicts.

limitation_placement is next_to_claim, same_page_further_down, linked_only or claim_not_used. next_to_claim is the default when a material qualification is needed. A linked page is not enough for material information that changes the meaning of the headline.

A limitation that contradicts the headline, such as “100% recycled” with “excludes cap and label” as the only qualifier while the headline stays 100% recycled, sets limitation_effect to contradicts and row_status to waiting even if both cells are filled. Narrow the headline instead. Whole-product versus body, cap and label scope stays visible.

The CMA fashion-retail compliance document of 18 September 2024 says important information should be clear, prominent and close to the environmental claim. Customers should not have to follow a hyperlink for that information. Space limits are not an excuse to make the claim. That document is sector-specific fashion guidance; the location rule is used here for product copy generally, not as a universal statutory condition.

Worked example: four Northgate lines

Limits

This is not a consumer shopping guide, not a second parent workflow, and not legal safe-harbour copy. Limitation fields sit on this rewrite sheet. Check one carbon-neutral sentence before publication.
