Regulator case-study analysis for environmental claims
Copy the instrument type, event date and source URL from a published decision page. Quote a short claim only when the source gives it. An investigation launch is not a finding. An undertaking is not an admission of infringement unless the document says so. Completing the log is not a finding against the reader's business.
Download the blank log. Pattern labels stay on the seven-types page. The fashion narrative stays on the fashion page. The six principles stay on the Code page.
Log the instrument, not the rumour
instrument_type is investigation_opened, undertaking, asa_ruling_upheld, asa_ruling_not_upheld, open_letter, sector_guidance, court_finding or other_named. Use event_date with that instrument type. Do not describe the 29 July 2022 CMA fashion launch as a decision finding.
An investigation opened is not a finding. An undertaking is not an admission of infringement unless the public document says so. The ASOS, Boohoo and Asda texts say they do not amount to an admission. Keep the 27 March 2024 undertakings separate from the sector open letter. Log the letter as a separate communication row.
An ASA upheld ruling applies to the ads assessed in the named period, not to every claim in that sector. Record assessed_ad_context and assessed_period. outcome_scope is this_ad for those rows.
claim_text_type is quoted, source_summary_no_single_quote or paraphrase. actual_claim_text is a short precise quotation only when the source gives it. A case-launch or undertaking row whose primary source summarises several practices uses source_summary_no_single_quote and must not invent a quotation. Separate quotation from paraphrase.
The Dualit ruling of 30 April 2025 applies pre-7-April-2025 CAP Code wording to that assessed ad. Do not relabel those historical rule references as the current code. Do not invent cases. Do not paste a journalist summary without the primary URL.
Decision log
Save a copy of the blank file and type into the copy. The files are plain CSV with no formulas. Example rows are public-decision summaries, not fictional Northgate cases.
Columns: case_id, claim_text_type, actual_claim_text, paraphrase_or_summary, advertiser_or_trader, regulator, event_date, instrument_type, assessed_ad_context, assessed_period, issue_in_one_sentence, outcome, outcome_scope, source_url, what_this_row_does_not_decide and note.
Types of greenwashing remains the examples article.
Worked examples: five regulator records
| Event date | Instrument | What the row records | What it does not decide |
|---|---|---|---|
| 29 July 2022 | Investigation opened | CMA opened an investigation into ASOS, Boohoo and George at Asda. Source-summary, no invented quotation. | Not a finding of infringement. |
| 27 March 2024 | Undertaking | Undertakings accepted. The published PDFs state they do not amount to an admission of infringement. | Not a court finding against other retailers. |
| 27 March 2024 | Open letter | Separate communication to the wider fashion sector. | Not an undertaking binding unnamed retailers. |
| 20 December 2023 | ASA ruling upheld | Quoted “We're proud to be a Carbon Neutral business” on a paid Facebook ad. Outcome: that ad must not appear in that form. | Not a ban on every carbon-neutral claim in clothing. |
| 30 April 2025 | ASA ruling upheld | Quoted “Compostable Coffee Bags”. Industrial EN 13432 was not home compostable in that consumer ad. Historical pre-7-April-2025 code wording. | Not a ban on the word compostable. |

Limits
This is not a greenwashing examples listicle and not a second fashion-case narrative. An investigation launch or open letter is a record, not an infringement finding. Do not generalise a narrow ASA ruling into a sector rule. Check one public net-zero commitment before publication.
Your next action
Finish one decision row in which investigation, undertaking, open letter and ruling stay distinct, and no invented case is added.
