ISO 14064-1:2018 remains the current catalogue edition for organisation-level quantification and reporting. The GHG Protocol Corporate Standard remains a public inventory accounting standard. The September 2025 partnership does not replace either. Choosing a reference is not verification and not certification.

GHG Protocol scope definitions stay on the scope guide. Inventory data stays in the carbon data pack. PPN 006 names specified GHG Protocol Scope 3 categories. UK reporting duties stay on the hub.

Current editions still apply

The ISO–GHG Protocol partnership FAQ of 23 September 2025 states that existing ISO and GHG Protocol standards remain in effect until a published replacement, with additional information on transition periods when new co-branded standards appear. Both organisations retain authority over their current standards. The 9 September 2025 announcement does not itself replace ISO 14064-1:2018 or the Corporate Standard.

ISO 14064-1:2018 is still the catalogue current edition, edition 2, stage 90.92 (International Standard to be revised). The catalogue says the publication was last reviewed and confirmed in 2024 and therefore remains current. A working draft of a third edition is not an edition the reader can follow.

The GHG Protocol Corporate Standard remains the public corporate inventory accounting and reporting document. Completing this page is not verification, certification, or ISO 14064-1 compliance.

Compare public purpose, then record what was asked

The comparison below uses only the public catalogue abstract and GHG Protocol public pages. It does not reproduce paywalled ISO clauses. Full compatibility is not inferred from abstracts.

GHG Protocol Corporate Standard ISO 14064-1:2018
Public purpose Corporate inventory accounting and reporting, from the public standard landing page Organisation-level specification for quantification and reporting of GHG emissions and removals, from the catalogue abstract
Scope named in public material Corporate inventory, with separate Scope 2 and Scope 3 publications named as existing programmes Design, development, management, reporting and verification of an organisation GHG inventory, as the abstract lists those words
Programme Programme-neutral on the landing page The ISO 14064 series is GHG programme-neutral, per the abstract
Verification as named publicly The Corporate Standard landing page does not present that standard as a verification specification The abstract includes verification of an organisation GHG inventory as a requirement area. Part 1 is not treated here as the verification specification. ISO 14064-3 is a separate verification standard; its clauses are not on this page
Availability Public corporate standard pages Paid standard; this page uses the catalogue listing only

Record what the customer or programme asked for. In-page fields, which you can copy into your own notes:

  • asked_reference: ghg_protocol, iso_14064_1, both, either or unknown
  • inventory_reference: which text the inventory is prepared against
  • verification_requested: yes, no or unknown
  • verification_obtained: yes, no or unknown
  • current_iso_edition_cited: 2018_catalogue or not_cited
  • partnership_replaces_current: no

Verification requested is not verification obtained. If the customer asked for a Carbon Reduction Plan, PPN 006 names specified GHG Protocol Scope 3 categories; that technical standard does not make ISO 14064-1 UK law. SECR cites UK Environmental Reporting Guidelines, not a choice of ISO versus Protocol as the statute. UK reporting duties stay on the hub. Inventory data stays in the carbon data pack. There is no download for this page.

Worked example: Northgate is asked for an ISO inventory and separate verification

Northgate Services is fictional. The customer asked for an inventory prepared against ISO 14064-1 and, separately, for verification. asked_reference is iso_14064_1. verification_requested is yes. verification_obtained is no. VerdaScope has not performed verification. ISO 14064-1 Part 1 is not treated here as the verification specification. ISO text is not on this page.

Limits

This page will never contain paid standard reproduction, a certification mark, or a claim that one standard is legally required for every UK SME. Catalogue prices and page counts may be named as listing facts, not as a substitute for the clauses. There is no CSV download.
